About Awareness Art

Awareness Art is a LIVED ART.  It is art integrated with everyday life.

Awareness Artists play with traditional artists' tools - writing, painting, dancing, sculpting - and they create in their "studio".  But their practice doesn't stop once they close those doors.

Awareness Art is practiced while washing the dishes, driving in rush hour traffic, navigating the business world, and deciding how to react after stepping on yet another Lego left precariously in the middle of the floor.  It is practiced while walking, breathing, eating, and painting.

It is a MINDFUL and NONJUDGMENTAL PRACTICE.  Leaving attachments and ideas of right/wrong, the Awareness Artist practices her or his art.  There is no perfection.  The artist zones out, gossips about a friend, yells a curse word at someone while driving...then remembers and returns to the practice and, without judgment, returns to a mindful, compassionate way of being.

I coined the term, "Awareness Artist" because no other label seemed to fit my calling.  I knew what I wanted to do in the world, but after exploring psychology, life coaching, research, teaching, and working in various mediums of art, I knew it wasn't that.  Instead, I integrated what got me excited from each of those fields and just started living it.

In my studio, I practice my art through Encaustic and Mixed Media play.  I create pieces that invite others into contemplation.  I often say that I'd rather receive a response of thoughtful silence to any of my art pieces instead of a, "Oh, isn't that pretty?!".

Online, I share my practice through writing.  Through my words, I may be a teacher for some, but I am a fellow traveller with all.  I share Awareness of those fascinating, soul-stretching moments...as well as those mundane, not-so-pretty moments.  After all, it is all part of the practice.

In my day-to-day life is the truth and source of all of my expression.  My mundane moments are where the richness of my practice occurs.  Through caring for two children, sharing a relationship with my husband, and navigating the ins-and-outs of household and business life, there are countless opportunities to practice mindful and compassionate responses.  (Running the Mindfulness Now project is a rewarding way to journey in this mundane mindfulness with others!)

I invite you to explore - through my words, art, or through your own experience....

Namaste
